#48 Weapons of the Inquisition
After Baelus the Revered publicly exposed her Soulblight nature, Marchioness Weiß was stripped of her rank among the freepeople and forced to retreat from Glymmsforge high society. The vampire found a sort of companionship with the malignant spirits of the Procession of the Foolish Martyrs and dwelt among them, becoming more and more like a Nighthaunt herself.
Unexpectedly, she discovered a new section of the Procession: the Sanguine Inquisition, recently reestablished by Lady Olynder in response to recent events in Barfunweltz, and tasked with monitoring the Procession’s activities on her behalf.
The Mortarch’s inquisitorial agents are in fact the very souls who comprised the Inquisition of the Society of the Sanguine Rose. So secret that only a handful of bishops knew the identity of its leaders, the Sanguine Inquisition rooted out any traces of resistance to the theological delusions of the Rose. Their chief weapons were fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, and an almost fanatical devotion to the False Apostle.
They were led by the spectre now known simply as The Inquisitor, who viciously and mercilessly pursued, tortured and executed any he judged to be heretics. He was diabolically ingenious with his innovations in torture and execution, yet he always appreciated the efficiency of beheading, the spectacle of hanging and the simple propriety of burning a heretic at the stake.
The Inquisitor (Lord Executioner) |
The Inquisitor relied on a network of spies among the congregations of the Sanguine Rose. Alert for the slightest hints of divergence from the False Apostle’s teaching, these heartless, scheming individuals meticulously recorded and passed on every perceived mis-thought and doubt, condemning fellow believers to terrible fates. These informants never actually delivered the Inquisition's violent sanctions themselves and most remained above suspicion all their lives. Yet every one had blood on their hands, and in death Nagash has seen fit to give them a far more direct and public role as his executioners.
Inquisitorial Informants (Grimghast Reapers) |
Let the enemies of the Rose beware, for no one expects the Sanguine Inquisition to be any less ruthless in death than they were in life.
